If you’ve been yearning for when every other game was a platformer featuring an anthropomorphic animal (whether they be hedgehogs, bobcats, crocodiles, ants, frogs, geckos or bandicoots), then you’re in luck. Cattch features a cat, and said cat jumps, punches and falls to their death, all for your amusement. And it’s out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
Cattch is an extremely colourful game, chucking you into a psychedelic world of colourful blocks. You’ll need to navigate said maze of blocks, as your friends have been captured by villains and it’s up to you to get them back. That won’t be easy, as the platforming is inch-perfect and precise, putting this at the top end of platforming difficulty.
The emphasis is on shifting platforms and timing your jumps right. Blocks move, phase into hazardous blocks, and even turn into enemies. There’s a rhythm in navigating the areas, and you’ll need more than nine lives to reach the end.
If there’s an innovation to be had here, it’s in the ability to rotate the game screen. You will be able to shift around gravity so that new paths can form, with walls suddenly becoming the floor. From the trailer, it looks like you will also have the ability to trigger a block switching to another block, so these two abilities could dovetail nicely to create fiendish puzzles.
There is combat tucked into Cattch too. You’ll have the ability to hit and scratch at enemies, so it won’t just be down to the timing of your jumps. Levels are timed, so you can attempt to beat your own high scores, while a few secrets are nestled into the corners of the map, so there’s longevity if you want to 100% it fully.
Cattch is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and starts at £8.39 from the Xbox Store. It’s coming to PC on December 22nd too. Hold tight for our full review of the game.
