Watch the upcoming film on your small screen the same day it hits the big screen.

The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie is set to launch on the HBO Max streaming service the same day that it launches in cinemas.

Media giant Warner has revealed its new strategy for films in 2021, opting to release its movies on its HBO Max platform for one month in the US when they come to the silver screen. Films in this initiative include Mortal Kombat, as well as The Matrix 4, Godzilla vs Kong and a Tom & Jerry film.

“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” Warner chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff said.

“No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theatres in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021. With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theatres or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films. We see it as a win-win for film lovers and exhibitors, and we’re extremely grateful to our filmmaking partners for working with us on this innovative response to these circumstances.”

That’s certainly good news for fans of the Mortal Kombat series. Last month, the film’s producer Todd Garner said that the film wasn’t going to hit its March 2021 release and didn’t actually have a launch date.

At least now it looks like it’ll see the light of day in 2021!
